Acrylic vs glass aquariums … what you prefer and why?
Glass the whole way. I have tried both. Acrylic is lighter and stronger, but in the Moment you get a piece of sand in your cleaning / scraping element, it will scratch. I think that the glass is more than clear acrylic appears. I am currently a 26 bowfront gallons and 55 gallons a long salt water. I had a 45 gallons acrylic and it did not look so alive.

Most plastics are not toxic to fish. When the gravel was bright blue, probably was coated to keep the blue dye from leaching into the water and killing the fish, it is not surprising that as Plastic smell. I would suspect a lot of other things to kill your fish before I would suspect the gravel. It is very unlikely. You know everything about the Nitrogen cycle in an aquarium? Research that really well and then think again, the gravel angle.
